What is the Moon Lodge?

From the beginning of time, in every culture, women had a space where they gathered to be together and pass on the Sacred Women’s Wisdom. Some cultures called it the Red Tent or the Moon Lodge. Women of all ages were present: young girls, mothers, elders. Because the entire society was deeply connected to the subtle rhythms of Nature and to each other, the women of the tribe would have their Moon Time (menstruation) simultaneously. The Moon Time, when a woman bleeds, is a sacred time when women are more psychic and open to the messages of wisdom that come from the Divine Feminine force within them. It is a time when women are meant to rest and retreat, being alone or in the company of other women. At this time in the ancient society, she was freed of her normal household duties to go and sit in the Moon Lodge with her women’s community. There the elder women would share their knowledge about which herbs could help to relieve the cramping. The younger maidens would go gather and help prepare the herbs for the menstruating women. Songs would be sung; stories would be told; wisdom about marriage, sexuality, and pregnancy would be shared. Babies were born in the Moon Lodge by midwives and doulas to assist them. The Moon Lodge was where women could regenerate themselves so that they could return to their families, able to give to and nurture the whole society. The visions they had and messages they received could be brought forward and integrated into daily life. This is how humanity maintained its harmony with the Earth and with each other.

Mother Earth

The Time of the Moon Lodge is Now

The Moon Lodge is not something of the past. It is here and now! We as women are remembering this much needed sacred space in our lives and we are creating it. Men are honoring it and are actually creating their own sacred spaces for transformation (see http://mankindproject.org). Society is changing and the world is awakening! You are most welcome to be part of it! The Moon Lodge of today looks a little different than it did in antiquity. Women no longer have their menstruation at the same time. It is no longer feasible to take days away from our families, jobs, and other responsibilities. However, women are resourceful, and we make do with what IS possible.

Women's Circle

Moon Lodge Gatherings:

Monthly Sharing Circle, FREE
The Moon Lodge of Indianapolis meets once per month in a free sharing circle located in a private home in the Broad Ripple area. This is the main monthly event where we can connect with one another in sacred space. We call in the seven directions [north (earth element), east (air element), south (fire element), west (water element), below (Mother Earth), above (Father Sky), and within (the Center)] and we purify the circle by salt water and sage. We tune into each other with a song or a guided meditation. Then we pass a crystal or other special object and take turns talking about our lives – what are we celebrating? what are our challenges? what is in our hearts right now? what is alive for us? The other members of the circle listen with love, welcoming the woman’s words into the space. Afterwards we close the circle in a similar way to how we opened. For refreshments we have tea and healthy snacks.

Women’s Drum & Dance for World Peace, 6:30 – 8 pm, $10
Meets the 1st and 3rd Friday of every month at the Playful Soul New Age Store in Broad Ripple
6516 N. Ferguson St, Indianapolis, IN 46220  (317) 253-0499

Bring an instrument that makes a noise that you like. A drum is preferred so please bring a drum if you have one. But if you don’t have a drum, you may bring a rattle, two sticks that bang together, or any other improvised instrument. Most importantly, bring an open heart and a willingness to try new things while empowering your expression! This is a wonderful opportunity for women who love music and want to practice EMPOWERING their inner musician/singer. This gathering is meant for amateurs so don’t feel shy! COME! We all have an inner musician. You will be surprised what kind of beautiful music we make! We improvise with sound, body percussion, voice, and dance – listening to each other, weaving our energies together, making a tapestry of beauty, sensing our own unique contribution to the whole. We would love to have you with us, co-creating these rhythms in sacred circle.

Grandmothers Group, $5 – $10 Love Offering, Meets once per month
This group focuses on empowering the Yin / Feminine energy within ourselves and on planet Earth. Together we study the books of Sharon McErlane who writes about her experiences with a group of Grandmothers that give wise advice on how to be a Walking Blessing upon the Earth (visit the website http://www.grandmothersspeak.com for more information). We also participate in a guided meditation called the Net of Light in which we visualize the net of energy that holds the Earth, stabilizing her through the great changes that are taking place. At each point where strands of the Net of Light intersect, there is the heart of a woman who embodies the Divine Feminine, lending her own healing force for the benefit of all beings. The Grandmothers are a source of support and guidance for us, elders who wish to help women embody the power which is our birthright. All women are welcome!

Community Ceremonies: Full Moon, New Moon, and Seasonal Holidays, $10 Love Offering, Meets several times per month
We observe the cycles of the moons and seasons by participating in guided meditations and activities that align us with Nature. City life has its benefits of easy access to new ideas and open-minded people. However, we can be so absorbed by our mundane lives that we miss the important transitions and special happenings with the moon and the seasons. Community ceremonies help us to connect to the cycles of Nature and are valuable in processing through our own life events. There is so much energy available to us to assist us in our lives. Community seasonal activities are an intentional way to harness that harmonious energy of the natural world and direct it towards healing for ourselves and our communities. In addition, they are a lot of fun! Come on out and play!

Storytelling by the Fire, $10 Love Offering, Meets twice per month
Together we read and discuss the amazing book Women Who Run With The Wolves to the blazing light of candles. A description of this book reads, “Within every woman there lives a powerful force, filled with good instincts, passionate creativity, and ageless knowing. She is the Wild Woman, who represents the instinctual nature of women. But she is an endangered species. In Women Who Run With The Wolves, Dr. Estés unfolds rich intercultural myths, fairy tales, and stories, many from her own family, in order to help women reconnect with the fierce, healthy, visionary attributes of this instinctual nature.” As we read these stories together, page by page, we connect more deeply to this Wild Woman archetype within us. Each week we cover a different fairy tale and pick apart the rich symbolism to understand the hidden messages for us as women. And of course, if you have a story that you’d like to tell around the fire, you are encouraged to bring it and share it with us!

Weekly Half-Hour Sitting Meditation, $5 Love Offering, Meets every week
This is a small, intimate group that walks the journey of meditation together. We start with understanding and calming the restless mind little by little and move gradually into the beauty of the meditation practice, the nourishing stillness. Effortless awareness is what we become together as we develop spiritually, week by week. Over time, meditation becomes something you love to do and you will have a deep understanding of this ancient sacred practice. If you would like to be part of this weekly meditation group, just let me know. You are more than welcome to join us. A special bond forms in groups of meditators who meet regularly, for we are connecting on a deeper level that lies beyond the body and mind. Come explore the stillness and peace that lies at your center.

Women’s Massage Circle, $5 Love Offering, Meets twice per month
Physical contact is so important to well-being. It soothes the nervous system and grounds us, giving a sense of security and peace. Have you been feeling like you need more touch in your life? It is not necessary to rely on an intimate partner to fulfill this need. We have our delightful women’s community to provide that sense of comfort and healing contact. We will do a 20 minute massage trade and another activity called “Fairy in the Middle”. Wear soft, comfortable clothing.

Divine Feminine Yoga Classes, $10 Love Offering, Meets every week
